What is the Difference Between Soreness and Pain?
Oct 17, 2023There are many different feelings a pitcher may have after they get off the mound and into the next day. A lot of times, I will get asked if what a player is feeling is normal or if it is something they need treatment on. General muscle soreness is something that you only need a couple restoration strategies and some time to recover and is considered normal. Pain is something where I would urge the player to seek out treatment to get that issue resolved because they most likely have a baseball injury.
Oftentimes, you can group what you feel into a separate category of soreness or pain.
Soreness typically presents as:
- A fullness feeling in the muscle
- Multiple body parts
- Comes on within 24 hours after throwing or intense activities
Pain typically presents as:
- A sharp feeling
- A specific spot on you body (oftentimes you can point to one spot on your elbow or shoulder)
- That sharp feeling comes on with each throw and can linger
If you fit in to the pain category, I would strongly recommend finding a therapist to work with that can get rid of that issue before a much bigger issue pops up.
