What Should I do Between Innings as a Pitcher to Stay Ready?

The average length of a baseball inning is about 20 minutes. As a baseball pitcher, especially a starter, that means you have to maintain your performance for 140 minutes if you go 7 innings.

In between innings is a great time to make sure that you can maintain that pitching performance for the length of the game. You do not want to completely "cool off" during the half inning while you wait to get back on the mound.

There are three things you can be doing to make sure you maintain your pitching performance throughout the whole game.

These include:

  1. Keep your shoulder/elbow warm (especially in a cold weather game). Put a sleeve or shirt over it.
  2. Make sure you hydrate! (7-8 oz of water every 20 minutes, every time you come back to the dug out)
  3. When there is a long inning, keep your arm active, but not by throwing more. Do some dynamic stretching or my personal favorite, Indian Clubs, to keep your arm "loose."

Give these a try and watch your pitching performance stay at your best throughout the whole game!
